>
> At a restaurant, a cockroach suddenly flew from somewhere and sat on a
> lady. She started screaming out of fear. With a panic stricken face and
> trembling voice, she started jumping, with both her hands desperately
> trying to get rid of the cockroach. Her reaction was contagious, as
> everyone in her group also got panicky.
> The lady finally managed to push the cockroach away but …it landed on
> another lady in the group.
> Now, it was the turn of the other lady in the group to
> continue the drama. The waiter rushed forward to their rescue.
> In the relay of throwing, the cockroach next fell upon the waiter. The
> waiter stood firm, composed himself and observed the behavior of the
> cockroach on his shirt. When he was confident enough, he grabbed it with
> his fingers and threw it out of the restaurant.
> Sipping my coffee and watching the amusement, the antenna of my mind
> picked up a few thoughts and started wondering, was the cockroach
> responsible for their histrionic behavior?
> If so, then why was the waiter not disturbed?
> He handled it near to perfection, without any chaos. It is not the
> cockroach, but the inability of the ladies to handle the disturbance caused
> by the cockroach that disturbed the ladies.
> I realized that, it is not the shouting of my father or my boss or my wife
> that disturbs me, but it’s my inability to handle the disturbances caused
> by their shouting that
> disturbs me. It’s not the traffic jams on the road that disturbs me, but
> my inability to handle the disturbance caused by the traffic jam that
> disturbs me.
> More than the problem, it’s my reaction to the problem that creates chaos
> in my life.
> Lessons learnt from the story:
> Do not react in life. Always respond. The women reacted, whereas the
> waiter responded.
> Reactions are always instinctive whereas responses are always well thought
> of, just and right to save a situation from going out of hands, to avoid
> cracks in relationship, to avoid taking decisions in anger, anxiety, stress
> or hurry.

If you know the answer tweet me @kapilb

———————————————————————————

10 straight-jacketed prisoners are on death row. Tomorrow they will be arranged in single file, all facing one direction. The guy in the front of the line (he can’t see anything in front of him) will be called the 1st guy, and the guy in the back of the line (he can see the heads of the other nine people) will be called the 10th guy. An executioner will then put a hat on everyone’s head; the hat will either be black or white, totally random. Prisoners cannot see the color of their own hat. The executioner then goes to the 10th guy and asks him what color hat he is wearing; the prisoner can respond with either “black” or “white”. If what he says matches the color of the hat he’s wearing, he will live. Else, he dies. The executioner then proceeds to the 9th guy, and asks the same question, then asks the 8th guy … this continues until all of the prisoners have been queried.

This is the night before the execution. The prisoners are allowed to get together to discuss a plan for maximizing the number of lives saved tomorrow. What is the optimal plan?

there is no way they can modify their voice to give clues.

Fwd: Employee Shopping: 'Acqui-Hire' Is The New Normal In Silicon Valley

*Subject:* *FW: Employee Shopping: ‘Acqui-Hire’ Is The New Normal In
Silicon Valley*

by DAN BOBKOFF

Google is one of several major tech companies known for the “acqui-hire.”

Tech companies like Google, Facebook and Zynga are on a shopping spree.
They’re buying small startups with innovative products and apps. But, many
times, the tech giants don’t care about what the small companies were
producing. They just want the engineers.

There’s a new name for these deals: the “acqui-hire,” and it could mean the
end to your favorite app.

Gabor Cselle created an app called reMail, which Google acquired.
I first noticed the phenomenon this summer when Google swallowed my
favorite email app. I paid money for it, and now it’s headed for a slow
death. Google just wanted the developers and was happy to buy the whole
company to get them.

Gabor Cselle knows what that’s like. In 2008, he created another email app
called reMail. It made it easier to search mail on a phone. As it started
to catch on, Cselle got his own call from Google.

“In comes Google and says, ‘How about we pay you a nice amount of money and
you don’t have to do all these things and you can work on something
exciting?’” Cselle says.

They wanted reMail. Or, maybe I should say, they wanted reMail to get
Cselle.

“The product itself got shut down,” Cselle says.

This is the crazy world of talent acquisition. “Acqui-hires” are very
Silicon Valley — the product of an explosion of new startups and a shortage
of engineering talent.

“Having two or three extremely talented engineers can be worth their weight
in gold,” says John Coyle, a law professor at the University of North
Carolina.

Coyle noticed these deals were multiplying in recent years. One of the big
reasons, he found, is saving face.

“You can then go into a bar with your friends the day after the deal closes
and tell your friends, ‘Hey, I just sold my company to Google.’ And, that’s
going to go over really well. People are going to be really excited for
you,” he says.

What’s not said in that bar is that the startup probably wasn’t doing so
well. It was not destined to be the next Twitter.

“So there’s a lot of startup companies. A lot of them won’t be able to
raise another round of financing, and they’ll need an exit strategy or they
need to shut down,” says Yoichiro Taku, a lawyer who’s worked on acqui-hire
deals.

An acqui-hire is an exit strategy that can make many people happy.
Investors get money back, the tech giants get to hire people who might not
have wanted to work there otherwise, and the founders look like they just
had a success.

But what about us? Coyle says his favorite e-reading app no longer worked
right after it was bought by Amazon.

“On the other hand, these tech companies are bringing these engineers over
to design new and exciting products for them. And, maybe in the long run,
these new products they’ll work on working for say, a Google or a Facebook,
will be more popular and even more beneficial than the apps they worked on
before,” Coyle says.

Cselle left Google three months ago to start a new venture. Today, he works
out of a big, shared workspace in San Francisco.

Tipatat Chennavasin sits behind Cselle. A burrito sits next to his pile of
iPads. The startup makes game apps that put your friends’ faces on the
characters.

I asked him if he’d consider an offer from a big company.

“No. And, we feel like acqui-hire, right now it’s really trendy, but we
feel like that’s failure,” Chennavasin says.

And, he’s not alone. Some companies have said publicly that they won’t be
acqui-hired.

Marco Arment built Instapaper because he wanted an easy way to save
articles he found online to read later on his train ride home. It turned
into a profitable business.

He’s turned down acqui-hire offers in the past because he likes working at
home with his wife and newborn and wouldn’t want to shut down a popular
product.

Arment doesn’t think it’s a big deal when failing companies are
acqui-hired. The problem is when demand for engineering talent goes off the
charts.

“Then, the acqui-hire prices climb, and that makes it hard for a company to
say no to the offer, even if they’re doing well,” he says.

As for himself, he never says never.

“Oh sure, everyone has a price,” Arment says.

So, watch out — before you know it, your favorite app could vanish,
swallowed by a hungry tech industry that just wants its engineers.

welovephoneography:

The Nikon D800 around his neck is linked to the iPad on his back via an Eye-Fi card and the ShutterSnitch app.

That means he can shoot a photo through his costume and have it show up on his back.

If you hang out with criminals, you become one

Someone I know was once arrested for economic fraud in India. He spent a couple of days locked up. When I met him, he said, “In two days in a white collar jail cell, I met some of the most seasoned criminals. They revealed various business ideas of how to cheat and deceive people. They offered to partner me to execute their plan. My challenge was not dealing with the mental torture of being locked up, but of preventing those criminal ideas from manifesting themselves in my mind.”

Rajat Gupta ‘hung out’ with Rajaratnam. Now, a man like Rajat Gupta, who has probably shaken as many hands as Obama has, knows how to ‘read’ people and quickly ascertain what they do. Yet he chose to associate with Rajaratnam. And sure enough, Rajaratnam brought him down.

Lesson: Do not associate with even borderline crooks. You will be transformed - from an entrepreneur to a fraud-preneur.

2. Some things are taught by the conscience, not mummy & papa

I recently signed up on a couple of websites to offer ‘over-the-phone’ consultancy to venture funds, investors, etc. who like to talk to professionals and entrepreneurs to understand specific domain issues and insights.

While registering myself, the online form made me take ‘tests’ to make sure I understood what ethics and code of conduct meant.

A question asked, “If a company you are doing diligence on offers to fly you first class to Las Vegas and back to help you ‘relax’ from your efforts, will you accept?” Now, when confronted by a question like this, I don’t need to scratch my head and wonder, “What did papa teach me?” Isn’t it obvious that the answer is a DEAD ‘NO’?

So, did Rajat Gupta need special guidance to understand that after a board meeting of a company in which you hear private, confidential information, you DON’T call up strangers and tell them what you heard? Hey! You don’t even call up your wife and tell her!

Was Rajat Gupta’s conscience eating a pretzel on the streets of New York, when he called Rajaratnam minutes after a secret Goldman Sachs’ board meeting and spilled all the information to him?

Lesson: Be guided by your conscience always. It will never lie to you. Do not believe anyone else.

3. Denial is a demonstration of vanity

The Rajat Gupta- Rajaratnam case and the Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky case bear a strong resemblance. Both defendants were powerful, men of the world, having ‘been there, done that, and seen it all’. When they were cornered into a situation that was clearly brought unto themselves, they went into what I call a ‘synthetic denial’. Both men used technical, obtuse, clinical language and terms to describe what they had done as being “incorrect, but not illegal”. Both insisted on making a public spectacle of themselves despite being so obviously in the wrong. Men like these have Himalayan-sized egos. Their false vanity deceives even themselves!

From what I read, Rajat Gutpa was offered a fine, a rap and no jail term by the SEC if he would have admitted to insider trading. But he chose not to accept and went on to defend his wrong!

Lesson: Don’t be in denial. Do not let your ego deceive you. We all make mistakes. Once discovered, correct it and redeem yourself as fast as you can!

4. When you are wrong, you are alone

As the Rajat Gupta prosecution shows, none of his best friends, associates or colleagues tried to save him or create a safety net for him. Lloyd Blankfein, the CEO of Goldman Sachs publicly castigated Rajat Gupta about his conduct while serving as a board member of Goldman Sachs. From what I understood, no one supported Rajat Gupta other than his family members. He was all alone.

Lesson: The old adage that ‘friends and well wishers will come to my rescue when I am trouble’ is bunk. No one will come. Save yourself, by yourself.

5. Greed is good, but it’s not God

Personally, I believe that the motivation to achieve a lot is a great way to create important value for yourself and for society. Greed is nothing but ambition to achieve more than you have. But I do not believe that greed is God!

Rajat Gupta had everything. He had achieved so much that he could’ve had statues of himself in Mumbai and New York, but he wanted more. His greed was not good; it became his God.

For some strange reason, the more successful people become, the more insecure they become about proving their capabilities, their self worth and their value! This is a disease of the rich.

Lesson: Be greedy, but be good. That’s what matters at the end.

[Little Background of Rajat Gupta : From being born into a middle-class family in Kolkata to reaching the stellar heights of the highly competitive world of Corporate America, the story of Indian American Rajat Gupta is nothing short of legendary. Ranking 15 in the IIT entrance exam of 1966, Gupta was admitted to Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi on a scholarship from where he did his B-Tech in Mechanical Engineering. He then came to the United States for a graduate degree and finished top of his class at the prestigious Harvard Business School where he studied on a scholarship. With a career graph that could make the best burn with envy, Gupta, who boasts of posts like head of consultancy giant McKinsey, board seats at Goldman Sachs and Procter and Gambleand special adviser to the United Nations, among other things, has done what not many could have done in his 63 years of life.

On June 16, 2012 Rajat Gupta was found guilty of conspiracy and securities fraud. He is the most prominent business executive convicted in a wave of prosecutions that followed the government’s sweeping investigation into insider trading on Wall Street. New York based US court held Gupta guilty of providing insider information to Galleon hedge fund founder and friend Raj Rajaratnam, in one of America’s biggest insider trading cases. After a month long trial in Federal District Court in Manhattan, a jury took only two days to deliberate before reaching a verdict. It found Mr. Gupta guilty of leaking confidential information about Goldman Sachs to his former friend and business associate, the fallen hedge fund titan Raj Rajaratnam, on three different occasions in 2008. He was also convicted of conspiring in an insider trading scheme with Mr. Rajaratnam, who has already been convicted and sentenced to 14 year jail term. Mr Gupta’s judgement will be delivered in October 2012.

Also see “A Saint Unravelled” published in FRONTLINE - http://www.frontlineonnet.com/stories/20120713291311300.htm ]

Bollywood Journal: The Pirate Life for Me? - India Real Time - WSJ

Bollywood Journal: The Pirate Life for Me?

By Beth Watkins

http://blogs.wsj.com/indiarealtime/2012/08/20/bollywood-journal-the-pirate-life-for-me/?mod=WSJ_latestheadlines

“Say NO to piracy,” the stars warn us in the interminable commercials that introduce the main attraction on every official DVD. But hasn’t that ship long since sailed into the sunset in a very un-Bollywood unhappy ending?

David McNew/Getty Images

As access becomes easier and more convenient, playing by the rules becomes less compelling. Those rules and cultural norms are changing, too. It’s not that most of us want to break the law, but the opportunity to acquire something we want cheaply is often too tempting to resist.

Whether sharing full copies of films or simply streaming illegally hosted videos as we discuss films, piracy is an integral part of movie fan culture. The options seem limitless, especially if you have good Internet access. Official DVDs are for rent or sale online; film companies put up official uploads on their YouTube channels (sometimes even with subtitles); many unofficial channels and hosting sites do the same; and pirated copies are for sale or rent at little shops around the world.

To help me think through some of the challenges the film industry faces in encouraging viewers to access and purchase films legally, I spoke to Leena R. Kamat, who practices law and watches Bollywood movies in Oakland, California. As she explained it, content owners are frustrated by the increasing ease of producing high-quality copies, while consumers are frustrated by more stringent copyright laws and new access control technologies that limit users’ ability to copy or share content. Nobody seems happy as things stand.

Ms. Kamat offered personal examples of sailing the pirate-infested waters of the local Indian community in suburban San Francisco. “Even before the ease of digital reproduction, piracy seems to have been a norm,” she said. “My family would rent VHS tapes for one dollar a piece, often requiring much patience to adjust the tracking. The VHS prints were blurry from having been copied over so many times, but now DVDs are even worse, out of focus and shaky from having been recorded from the back of a movie theater, with random audience member silhouettes and conversations interjecting into the narrative.”

Ms. Kamat described piracy as depending on the complacency of its participants.

That includes all of us, from aunties who unknowingly (or knowingly?) rent a copied DVD, to savvy users who scour the net for torrents, to fans who simply want to share a rare song or scene with other fans on Youtube. When I asked friends on Twitter whether and why they pirate films, I got repeated refrains of, “I pirate the films that don’t seem good enough to pay for” and, “I download movies that didn’t screen in a cinema near me.”

It’s so interesting to think of our behaviors simmered down to their essences: quality, convenience and a sense of entitlement. I cannot shake the feeling that most of us would probably not hesitate to call the same behaviors “theft” if they were applied to other types of goods and services like transportation, clothing or even books.

Movies meet so many basic human needs and desires—artistic and emotional expression, entertainment, nostalgia, solace, affirmation of shared values, bonds to family and community around the world—that it’s easy to forget that they are also products that cost money to create. But even though cinema is not exactly analogous with more mundane products, aren’t we viewers, as the consumers of cinema, responsible for paying for it? If there stops being sufficient money for those who take risks in the business of making films, will films simply cease to exist?

That’s probably a wild oversimplification, but it is the bottom-line fear that grabs me and makes me care about these issues: If I don’t pay to enjoy movies, will there still be movies to enjoy? In a recent interview with The Times of India, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap voiced another important side of the conversation about piracy. Piracy plays an important role not only in providing audiences with entertainment and art but also in spreading the creators’ works and messages. “We filmmakers should use cinema as a tool to make a strong impact on society. And if people are watching such meaningful cinema through piracy, I believe it only helps to deliver the filmmaker’s message to the masses,” he said.

Commenting on Mr. Kashyap’s statements, Techdirt writer Tim Cushing pointed out that attitudes like this are grounded in the view that piracy is a kind of flattened distribution system, one that can lead to greater exposure for artists—and, eventually, bigger paying audiences.

I asked Ms. Kamat what the film industry could do about a complex situation that looks like a losing battle, especially when it’s hard to work up much sympathy for wealthy celebrities and producers. “I think that as consumers become aware of more options like official uploads and licensed rentals, the demand for pirates will decrease,” she said.

Hear that, distributors? Perhaps it’s time to see what happens if you provide legal access that’s as convenient as what pirates offer and with high quality that you can control and proudly put your name on.

What effect do you think piracy has on the film industry and your choices about how you access films? If you got an email from a friend saying “I know you’ve wanted to see Film X for years and have never been able to find it. Do you want me to upload it for you?” what would you do? There are thousands of temples all over India in different size, shape
and locations but not all of them are considered to be built the Vedic way.

Generally, a temple should be located at a place where earth’s magnetic wave
path passes through densely. It can be in the outskirts of a town/village or
city, or in middle of the dwelling place, or on a hilltop.
The essence of visiting a temple is discussed here.

Now, these temples are located strategically at a place where the positive
energy is abundantly available from the magnetic and electric wave
distributions of north/south pole thrust. The main idol is placed in the
core center of the temple, known as “Garbhagriha” or Moolasthanam. In fact,
the temple structure is built after the idol has been placed. This
Moolasthanam is where earth’s magnetic waves are found to be maximum. We
know that there are some copper plates, inscribed with Vedic scripts, buried
beneath the Main Idol . What are they really? No, they are not God’s /
priests’ flash cards when they forget the shlokas.

The copper plate absorbs earth’s magnetic waves and radiates it to the
surroundings. Thus a person regularly visiting a temple and walking
clockwise around the Main Idol receives the beamed magnetic waves and his
body absorbs it. This is a very slow process and a regular visit will let
him absorb more of this positive energy. Scientifically, it is the positive
energy that we all require to have a healthy life.

Further, the Sanctum is closed on three sides. This increases the effect of
all energies. The lamp that is lit radiates heat energy and also provides
light inside the sanctum to the priests or poojaris performing the pooja.
The ringing of the bells and the chanting of prayers takes a worshipper into
trance, thus not letting his mind waver. When done in groups, this helps
people forget personal problems for a while and relieve their stress.
The fragrance from the flowers, the burning of camphor give out the chemical
energy further aiding in a different good aura. The effect of all these
energies is supplemented by the positive energy from the idol, the copper
plates and utensils in the Moolasthanam /Garbagraham.

Theertham, the “holy” water used during the pooja to wash the idol is not
plain water cleaning the dust off an idol. It is a concoction of Cardamom,
Karpura (Benzoin), zaffron / saffron, Tulsi (Holy Basil), Clove, etc …
Washing the idol is to charge the water with the magnetic radiations thus
increasing its medicinal values. Three spoons of this holy water is
distributed to devotees.

Again, this water is mainly a source of magneto-therapy. Besides, the clove
essence protects one from tooth decay, the saffron & Tulsi leafs protects
one from common cold and cough, cardamom and Pachha Karpuram (benzoin), act
as mouth fresheners. It is proved that Theertham is a very good blood
purifier, as it is highly energized.. Hence it is given as prasadam to the
devotees.

This way, one can claim to remain healthy by regularly visiting the Temples.
This is why our elders used to suggest us to offer prayers at the temple so
that you will be cured of many ailments . They were not always
superstitious. Yes, in a few cases they did go overboard when due to
ignorance they hoped many serious diseases could be cured at temples by
deities. When people go to a temple for the Deepaaraadhana, and when the
doors open up, the positive energy gushes out onto the persons who are
there. The water that is sprinkled onto the assemblages passes on the energy
to all.

This also explains why men are not allowed to wear shirts at a few temples
and women are requested to wear more ornaments during temple visits . It is
through these jewels (metal) that positive energy is absorbed by the women .
Also, it is a practice to leave newly purchased jewels at an idol’s feet and
then wear them with the idol’s blessings.

This act is now justified after reading this article . This act of
“seeking divine blessings” before using any new article, like books or pens
or automobiles may have stemmed from this through mere observation.

Energy lost in a day’s work is regained through a temple visit and one
is refreshed slightly . The positive energy that is spread out in the entire
temple and especially around where the main idol is placed, are simply
absorbed by one’s body and mind.

Our practices are NOT some hard & fast rules framed by 1 man and his
followers or God’s words in somebody’s dreams.

All the rituals, all the practices are, in reality, well researched,
studied and scientifically backed thesis which form the ways of nature to
lead a good healthy life.

The scientific and research part of the practices are well camouflaged as
“elder’s instructions” or “granny’s teaching’s”

Behance Portfolio Reviews - Nairobi

Between May 14th-21st, Behance Portfolio Reviews will be happening in cities and towns around the world.

Take part in the Behance Community offline, and to be part of a collective experience of sharing and receiving feedback.

And the creatives in Nairobi City will not be left out on this opportunity. Yep! our first Portfolio Review. 6 Portfolio presentations (6 presenters as follows; 1 seasoned Art Director and 1 amateur Art Director/Designer, 1 seasoned Copywriter and 1 amateur Copywriter, 1 seasoned photographer and 1 amateur photographer), each presentation takes 3 minutes and then 5 minutes for critiques and appreciation…

RSVP on http://www.meetup.com/BehanceReviews/Nairobi/ and Get your FREE eTickets at http://behanceportfolioreviewnairobi.eventbrite.com/

(This event is made possible by Behance Network, ADCC members, *iHub_Nairobi, Ogilvy Kenya and BluePrint) Incase you have any questions or want to make this a success contact me on omondi@facebook.com
